Normally if I am first time to any cuntry in the world I would spend quite a considerable time researching in advance given the wide reach of the internet, not just in here but all over other sites & forums, if you found those that are very similar & repeated a lot by different parties but in different forms will means that it is most probably right advice & not fake
To me all of vietnam is predominantly safe from serious crime & such, but not to petty thefts & pickpockets, if first time just go to HCMC no point to be too adventurous on a 1st trip unless you know the local language or have a long haired dicktionery by your side
