Re: Siem Reap (Cambodia) Experiences

Went to Siem Reap a couple or so years ago, but it's how very poor the place is that got to me - and how lavish and expensive the hotel we were staying at in comparison; felt it so incongruous.

Angkor Wat was of course fabulous - but it was soooo hot!

And by the way - I was pre-warned and thus brought along a stack of US$ 1 and $5 notes - which is the best currency to use there; also, make sure you bring with you two identical passport photos to avoid being ripped off when applying for the visa on arrival.

And of course be very careful with your belongings as things disappear/one of our luggage disappeared from the airport to the hotel.

Good luck if you are visiting Siem Reap.
Which hotel did you stay at and how much was it? Next time I come (if ever) I gotta stay at a more sensible place!

I stayed at the Raffles Grand and I remember thinking on the way back to my hotel that the whole thing was ridiculous; that I had "sort-of" bargained the girl down on her price and here I was, at the same time paying at least 4 times the amount just for my hotel room.

And actually when I checked out, it was over 5 times her price, even including the generous tip I gave! Heck just the taxes and other charges amounted to as much as I paid the gal for the whole night!!

Made me feel terrible then....but....lets face it, the gal was very pleased with what she "earned" regardless..... And I was equally pleased too! LOL

Cool Re: Siem Reap (Cambodia) Experiences

I stayed at Angkor Boutique Tropic which is not so close to Pub/Market Street. About US $40 per night. To walk will be about 20mins. Tuk-tuk readily available. This just 3 star hotel but I feel is good enough for me. Alternatively, there is Tara Angkor hotel nearby which is 4star. Tara is listed in many blog as girl friendly but I wrote in to ask , the reply was that extra guest need to pay. So I don't want to risk. I go for Angkor boutique since they replied that as long as not more than 2 paxes per room, there will be no charges.

You are right that the extra payment for extra guest don't make sense. Anyway, under your situation you have no choice.

Hope this helps.

Too true! Especially one like this which evokes nostalgic by-gone colonial eras - filled with old people!

Hotel was booked by my older friends who did enjoy high tea! LOL

Re: Siem Reap (Cambodia) Experiences

Somehow I feel that the Khmer girls is Siem Reap are prettier and more service oriented to customers as compared to those in PP, unless you are willing to pay a hefty sum of money for a PRC girl in the KTV at Nagaland as advertised by their mamasans. We told the mamasan that we need to try our luck in the casino before coming back.
Go to any KTVs in SR, and you can choose and pick the prettiest girl to your liking for 50-100 USD.
Tips are additional but the 15 USD levied by the hotel for bringing back the girl is atrocious.

Cool Re: Siem Reap (Cambodia) Experiences

I can't comment about PP since I have not been there yet but from what others bro have posted in PP thread. It seem to be more "commercialise" even being able to get PRC there.
Hope I have a chance to visit PP to try it out.

one of the ktv gal I met in SR was actually from PP. She doesn't like the type of life there, she pprefer SR. Probably lesser competition, I guessed. I found the gals in SR are more demure and nice. Always smiling without ill-intention.

I avoided hotels that charges for gals overnight stay. There are many there that still do not charge extra for overnight stayer.
