S'pore police involved in online "sextortion" raid

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Police Force (SPF) said it participated in the Interpol-coordinated operation which had targeted organised crime networks behind “sextortion” cases around the world.

During the operation, a series of raids was carried out by the Philippines National Police in Bicol, Bulacan, Laguna and Taguig City on 30 April and 1 May.

Philippines Police and Interpol announced on Friday that 58 people were arrested in the Philippines for their involvement in a giant, global Internet "sextortion" network.

They said victims were lured by people posing as attractive, young women into giving sexually-explicit photos or videos of themselves online, then sometimes blackmailed repeatedly for thousands of dollars.

SPF also advise Singaporeans to take preventive measures when interacting online.

These include being wary of messages from unknown people, and avoid revealing personal details when interacting with other internet users.
