Tea break jiak simi? My fav: Kaya, durian and mango flavor.
Rich and Good Cake Shop – This Is How They Roll!

Swiss roll fans definitely wouldn’t want to miss this. Or all pastry fans, for that matter. This little bakery has been raved about time and again by journalists and bloggers alike. Yet I find it absolutely necessary to blog about it at least once, in case some of you do not know of it. It is here where you might find the best Swiss rolls in Singapore.

And that’s the Rich and Good Cake Shop! That’s what they call themselves. My, rather ambitious aren’t they? This 14 year old bakery specialises in Swiss rolls, and has my Mom and I as die-hard fans! My bro would get these puffy and spongy pasteries for us each time he passes by Arab street.

Kaya Swiss Roll
S$14 for a box of 2
Rating:
Not to be missed is the kaya (creamy coconut jam) Swiss roll. It’s the best-selling flavour. The creamy kaya filling tastes rich and fragrant, without being too sweet at the same time. Ahhh… Pure joy!

You know how you sometimes get that dry mouth feel after eating cake? You wouldn’t get that from eating the Swiss rolls here. They have such ample layers of moist filling that you would just keep eating more and more!

Durian Swiss Roll
S$14 for a box of 2
Rating:
Durians, you either love ’em or hate ’em. I belong to the latter camp but the people I love love durians! I haven’t personally sampled the durian rolls but I know that durian fans would find these irresistable. Made with authentic D24 durians, you can actually see and taste the chunks of durian flesh within the rolls!

One interesting thing about the Swiss rolls here is that they are sold in their whole, uncut forms. So for $12 to $14, you get two foot-long rolls of the delicious goodies! They come in long boxes coloured in a gentle shade of baby pink too. Sweet!

Here’s a complete list of the available flavours and their prices:

– Durian Swiss roll (S$14)
– Kaya Swiss roll (S$14)
– Mango Swiss roll (S$14)
– Green Tea Swiss roll (S$14)
– Orange Swiss roll (S$14)
– Strawberry Swiss roll (S$13)
– Blueberry Swiss roll (S$13)
– Coffee Swiss roll (S$12)
– Chocolate Swiss roll (S$12)

Ah Gong believes that we must support those stalls run by local people who can deliver good quality food at affordable prices . But Ah Gong also knows that cost of operating a stall will only get higher and higher .

How abt this for tempting n many flavors?

Poh Cheu Handmade Ang Ku Kueh @ Bukit Merah Lane 1

When I came by Alexandra Village Food Centre the other day and was just walking around to explore the neighbourhood, I spotted a long queue at Poh Cheu which specialises in handmade soon kueh and ang ku kueh.

I went up to the stall to have a closer look and I saw an array of colourful ang ku kueh on display. So tempted to buy them so I joined the queue.

They had 12 different types of ang ku kueh. Each flavour was represented by a different colour except peanut and green bean which were both red.

Just look at those colours. So pretty!

I requested one of each flavour that was available (9 out of 12) and added 1 more piece of green bean.

This was indeed a fantastic ang ku kueh. Each ang ku kueh was round and plump unlike most others that were slightly flatter in shape. The skin was thin, soft, smooth and oily (not rubbery at all) and the filling was thick, dense and perfectly seasoned.

How did the flavours fare after I had tried all?

Green bean – fragrant, robust tasting
Yam – like smooth yam puree, flavour not as intense but it had a nice fudgy texture
Green tea – more like green tea flavoured lotus seed paste, smooth with a strong fragrance of green tea
Red bean – smooth paste but too sweet, still like it though ‘cos I like anything red bean anyway
Peanut – coarsely ground peanuts that gave a nice crunch, roasted flavour
Pineapple – artificial, just like those ready made pineapple paste, tasted weird
Salted bean – reminded me of salted tau sar piah filling but this melted in the mouth, peppery taste
Mango – artificial, not much mango flavour
Durian – first bite came with a hint of durian flavour but none after that, tasted like the green bean one but with artificial flavour
My favourites would have to be the green bean, yam, red bean and peanut. I preferred the traditional flavours to the non-conventional ones. Worth giving them a try if you’re a fan of ang ku kueh.
